Our MacCarthy Cup Mural (August 2026)

We dedicated our MacCarthy Cup Mural to every player from Moycarkey Borris who proudly wore the Blue and Gold.

The Liam MacCarthy Cup is awarded annually to the Winners of the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship (Liam McCarthy was a former President of London GAA). The cup was modelled on an ancient drinking vessel known as a mether. It is the most prestigious trophy in hurling.

In the aftermath of Tipperarys winning of the 2025 All Ireland final Rhys Shelly waited to share raising the MacCarthy Cup aloft on the Hogan Stand with his Moycarkey and Tipperary colleague Kieran Cummins. Illustrating this unique image of two Moycarkey -Borris players joyfully holding the Cup is the central feature of our mural. Hopefully, many more of our players will aspire to being on successful Tipperary teams in the years ahead.

Moycarkey Borris players on earlier Tipperary teams are represented on our Mural by John Flanagan and Johnny Ryan Cusack.

John Flanagan was a regular on the Tipperary team from the mid 1960’s to the mid 1970’s. He scored the final winning point in the knockout Munster Final of 1971 in Killarney and won his MacCarthy Cup medal at number 12 in that year’s final against Kilkenny. In his 30’s he was a key player in the Moycarkey Borris teams that won the County and Munster Senior Hurling Championship of 1982 and the Centenary County Championship of 1984.

Johnny Ryan was a regular on the Tipperary and Munster teams from the late 1930’s to the late 1940’s. A versatile defender he Captained the Tipperary Munster Final Winning team of 1941 against Cork. Johnny won MacCarthy Cup medals in the 1937 and 1945 Finals against Kilkenny. He shared these Tipperary triumphs with his brothers Paddy (Sweeper), Mutt and other Moycarkey Borris players. Johnny played in a golden era for Moycarkey Borris teams that won 5 County Senior Hurling titles in a decade, 3 in a row in the 1930’s and the coveted Jubilee County Championship of 1934.

Our MacCarthy Cup Mural is the latest in a series of projects to record the club’s heritage and tradition including the Sean Keating Tipperary Hurler portrait featuring John Joe Hayes, the painting of Jack Bergin raising the Dan Breen Cup in Semple Stadium (1984) and the Club crest explanatory poster.
