U11 Paddy Cooney Memorial Tournament
Today Moycarkey-Borris hosted its annual Paddy Cooney memorial tournament. We had teams from Cork, Kilkenny, Tipperary and Limerick in attendance.
In group one Moycarkey-Borris, Patrickswell, Emeralds, Fenians/St Patrick’s and Bride Rovers played a round robin where all teams played each other. Moycarkey topped the group, winning all their games with Bride Rovers as runners up.
Moycarkey and Bride Rovers contested a very hard fought final in atrocious conditions. Moycarkey came out on top and are the Paddy Cooney Trophy winners for 2023. Paddys son, Martin Cooney was on hand to present the winning captain, Eoin Darmody with the trophy. Martin spoke very well to all players giving wise words of encouragement.
In Group 2 Moycarkey-Borris, Fenians/St Patrick’s, Bride Rovers and Thurles Gaels contested a round robin series with Moycarkey-Borris and Thurles Gaels qualifying for the final.
A keenly contested game was won by an impressive Thurles Gaels team who bring the Paddy Cooney shield back to the Mill Road for 2023.
A special thanks to our four referees, Adam Rice, Jayden Rodgers, Liam Corcoran and Darragh O'Dwyer who performed their task admirably.
Thanks also to Andy Cooney who was on the bagpipes and led all teams in the pre tournament parade.
We would also like to thank Thurles Gaels for the lend of extra juvenile goal posts for the day. These posts were very kindly transported to and from Littleton by Niall Byrne. Much appreciated!
Thanks very much to the parents who took over the catering and put on a great spread for all the competing teams and mentors. It isn't the first time this year that teams have availed of their outstanding hospitality.
Finally thanks to all teams who travelled and made the day a successful one . Well done to all players and mentors for your efforts!
Roll on 2024
